Bioelectronic Interfaces for Signal and Energy Transduction
This project aims to develop a generic platform that permits two-way electrochemical communication with biological cells and systems.
The development of this platform is based on the engineering of biocompatible electrode materials that promote cell growth while achieving (preferrably amperometirc) signal transduction. Ideally, probing of cell metabolism will lead to in vitro systems for health applications, drug development, and biosensing, while bidirectional electron transfer will allow energy harvesting.
The proposed demonstration systems include synchronous cardiomyocite culture, and microalgae adressing the different applications. The project will build on existing experience (Herrero-Medina, Z., et al., Bioelectrochemistry, 146:108128, 2022) for strategies to create the universal interface with biological systems and will involve the characterisation, data analysis, and modeling of the resulting platform. Proof of concept work: (Fang, J. et al., Microsystems and Nanoengineering, 7:26, 2021), room for improvement in state of the art: (Ebin, J. et al., NPJ Biosensing, 1:15, 2024).
